LEGACY:

The original Delta was a revolution in the Sport-Performance class, and incorporatedcutting edge design features which launched it into the class above in terms ofperformance. Not only was its speed and glide revolutionary, it also retainedan incredibly compact and agile feel due to its moderate aspect ratio. TheDelta could have been difficult to improve upon, but we are pleased to reportthat the new Delta 2 represents an equally significant, and even more exciting, step forward in paraglider technology.

MISSION:

Our mission for the Delta 2 was to retain the comfort, safety, and ease ofuse of the original, but take the performance to the next level. In addition tothat, we wanted to fine-tune the handling and cultivate a more fun and playfulfeel. This was not easy, we have to admit, and it was a long process tocomplete. The new Delta 2 is a complete re-design from top to bottom andrepresents a new direction for the series, but we believe we have produced atruly superb wing.

TECHNOLOGY:

Arc >> The first thing you will notice whenyou see the Delta2 in the air is the Ozone Performance Project inspired arc, which was taken directly from the BBHPP / R10 family of performance wings. Thisarc, yet unseen in the Sport-Performance category, is used in our competitionwings and is unmatched for sail cohesion, turn efficiency and authority, andoverall handling.

Sail Tension >> A more highly refined sail tensionhas created a more compact and intuitive feel for the Delta 2. In active air,you will notice an even more precise feel with improved feedback and a moreprogressive brake travel. While the original Delta featured the cleanest sailever offered in the Sport-Performance class, the new Delta 2 is even smootherdue to next generation panel shaping along the entire span.

Profile >> A completely new profile is one ofthe key factors in the Delta 2’s revolutionary performance gains. It is ahybrid design combining the best features of the R11 SharkNose technology withthe fun and efficiency of the M4. It is solid at accelerated speeds, andextremely resistant to spin and parachutal stall. The shark profile provides amore constant internal pressure in active air and turbulence, increasingpassive stability (collapse resistance) and creating an even more comfortableand stable feel in accelerated flight. This new advanced profile has alsoimproved the launch behaviour by reducing the “shooting” in higher windconditions.

The Next Generation in Low Drag Lineplans >> Our R&D Teamconstantly focuses on “free” performance gains, especially by reducingline-drag wherever possible. The Delta 2 offers an incredible 26% reduction intotal line drag. This, combined with the overall increase in efficiency and thebenefits of the SharkNose profile, has allowed us to reduce the total wingarea.

Custom Sizing >> The Delta 2 is now available in 6 sizesto optimize the weight range for a wider selection of pilots.

While the original Delta redefined XC flying for countless pilots aroundthe world, we are confident that these exciting improvements to the Delta 2will once again put this wing in a class of its own. We firmly believe that theDelta 2 is in the category above in terms of performance, but still remainssquarely in the middle of the Sport-Performance class in terms of safety andease of use. The Delta 2 is an ideal wing for pilots in this category who aresearching for the next generation of XC performance.

ACTIVE C RISER CONTROL

When gliding at trim or in accelerated flight it is possible to pilot withthe C risers. This gives an improved feel and control over the wing, enablingyou to fly actively without using the brakes (which cause drag and pitchmovements). The direct feel allows you to stop collapses before they happen andmaintain higher speeds and higher levels of efficiency through turbulence.

To fly with the C risers, keep hold of your brake handles (remove anywraps) and take hold of the handles located at the top of the C risers. Withthe C risers you can fly actively through turbulence; If you feel the nose ofthe wing lose internal pressure you can apply pressure to the C’s to keep itopen. The amount of pressure and size of the input is dependent upon the amountof turbulence, but always be gentle at first to learn the feel of the movementand to avoid large pitch oscillations.

NOTE: This control method is suitable for gliding in good ‘normal’ airwithout serious turbulence, it does not replace proper active flying using thebrakes in strong turbulent conditions. If you are unsure about the air, thenreturn the glider to trim speed, release the C risers, and fly the glider activelywith the brakes.

IMPORTANT: Be careful to use only small inputs tothe risers as you risk stalling part or all of the wing if you are overenthusiastic. Be prepared for plenty of practice as this new method may takesome time to become totally intuitive, efficient, and comfortable.

THE CONCEPT:

Keep the Delta’s legendary comfort but increase the performance, fun, andhandling.

NEW FEATURES:

Almost everything!

·        The Delta 2 features a new arc takendirectly from our performance research project. This arc, yet unseen in thiscategory of wing, is normally used in our competition wings and is superb forsail cohesion, turn efficiency/turn authority and overall handling.

·        Aspect ratio has been increased up to 6.0,however the sail cohesion and levels of passive safety are improved relative tothe Delta1 thanks to the new arc and new structure.

·        The sail tension has been refined for anoverall better feeling. The Delta 2 has high levels of precision, with a moredirect and progressive brake pressure.

·        The profile is completely new. It’s acombination of the M4 and the R11 shark profile; solid at speed and extremelyresistant to spin or parachutal. It always re-starts without delay.

·        The new profile and sail tension allowsfor high levels of precision, especially in the first part of the brake rangewhilst retaining a long overall brake travel. Thanks to the increase inpressure at the end of the brake range, the point of spin is very deep andrecognisable. This gives authority, efficiency, comfort and confidence to thepilot, especially whilst thermalling in turbulent air. Thermalling with the Delta2is an extremely pleasant experience!

·        The shark profile allows for a moreconstant internal pressure through turbulence, increasing collapse resistanceand adding to comfort and solidity at speed.

·        The chordwise structure is deriveddirectly from the M4, with the addition of a few small D lines to maintain avery clean trailing edge shape. It also makes C riser control in turbulent airintuitive and effective.

·        Further line optimisation has reduced theoverall total line drag by 26%.

·        The sail is even cleaner than the Deltawith improvements made in panel shaping, reducing creases overall.

·        Combined, these improvements send theDelta2 into the next category in terms of performance; it glides 0.1 pointbetter than the M4!!!

·        The higher wing efficiency and sharkprofile has allowed a significant wing area reduction. In comparison with theoriginal Delta M, the new Delta2 ML is slightly smaller and goes up to 105kg.

·        Other small details have been improved:The plastic rods are now replaceable, and the risers include special C togglesto allow comfortable C-riser control.

·        INDEPENDENT REVIEWS:

·        “In Summary: TheDelta 2 is a force to be reckoned with! It launches superbly, and turns whenyou move your finger in the direction you want the wing to go. This glider issensationally solid, glides very well, is easy to accelerate, and it deliverspure pleasure and happiness to the pilot.

·        Although theSharkNose profile and dynamic nature might make it look and feel at firstglance a bit aggressive, in the end this is not true. In any case, anyone whoflies regularly will not experience any bad surprises. Except that thepermanent smile induced by the D2 can only be removed by surgery. This is trulya wing designed how wings should be. Amen.”

·        -THERMIK MAGAZINE, 7/2013

·        I had a greatinto-wind XC flight around the mountains in strong stuff today, and the D2 isoutrageous. The turn is a dream, it goes like a train through the rough stuff, and even collapses at the correct time helping it stay out of trouble. How canyou keep making better and better wings… thank you, it’s a privilege to flyyour wings!

SIV AND MAINTENANCE

The Delta2 was certifiedwith the use of additional collapse lines for accelerated manoeuvres only.

The Delta2 is a newgeneration wing which incorporates our latest technology. Alongside theSharkNose, one of the developments we have incorporated is moving the A tabsfurther away from the leading edge and deeper into the chord. This makes thewing more collapse resistant; more solid, stable and confidence inspiring.

It is possible to performSIV training with the Delta2, in fact we strongly recommend it. Trim speedsymmetric and asymmetric collapses using the A risers to deflate the wing asnormal are possible. However, we strongly recommend to not perform full speedsymmetric and asymmetric collapses with the A risers alone. All othermanoeuvres however, are possible.

Pulling the A risers orcollapse lines is an artificial way of simulating real life collapses. Inreal-life collapses the Delta2 behaves in a similar manner as any other wing inthe same category, however, to induce a full speed collapse that conforms tothe EN certification requirements it must be done with the use of additionalcollapse lines. When you induce a full speed side collapse without using collapselines the results may be different than during certification because the canopypre-accelerates*, further increasing the artificiality of the test. Usingcollapse lines reduces the amount of pre- acceleration, this makes the collapsemore in line with certification requirements. Collapse lines need to be mountedaccurately, with attachment tabs sewn into the nose of the wing, but since theyare not supplied with the wing we strongly recommend to not induce full speedsymmetric/asymmetric collapses at all.

*Pre-acceleration is whenthe glider accelerates before collapsing. Imagine flying at full speed andpulling an A riser to induce an asymmetric collapse (remember using the A riseris already an artificial way of simulating real life collapses). With the A’sfurther back in the chord, instead of deforming and folding immediately, theside that you pull actually accelerates first (because of the reduction ofAofA), thus momentarily causing a turn in the opposite direction. Therefore, atthe point of collapse because everything is not in line - slight turn, slightroll/yawing action in the other direction - collapses are even more artificial, with potentially a greater kink angle, more chance of shock re-inflations andpossibly more dynamic reactions. Such collapses are outside of the requirementsof EN certification and do not represent the majority of real life collapses.
